NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned on Tuesday that countries such as Brazil, China and India can be hard hit by secondary sanctions if they continue to do business with Russia.

Rutte commented amid a meeting with senators in the United States Congress, a day after President Donald Trump announced new weapons to Ukraine and threatened with 100% “scathing” secondary rates over Russian export buyers unless there is a 50 -day peace agreement.

“My encouragement to these three countries, particularly, is, whether you now live in Beijing, or Delhi, or if you are the president of Brazil, you may want to take a look at it, because it can hit you very strongly,” said Rutte, who met with Trump on Monday and agreed with the new steps.

“So please make a phone call to Vladimir Putin and tell him that he needs to take peace negotiations seriously, otherwise this will affect Brazil, India and China massively,” Rutte added.

Republican Senator Thom Tillis praised Trump for announcing the measure, but said that the period of 50 days worries him.

He said he was concerned that “Putin try to use the 50 days to win the war, or to be better positioned to negotiate a peace agreement.”

“Therefore, we should look at the current situation of Ukraine and say that no matter what you do in the next 50 days, any of your earnings is out of the question,” he added.

Rutte said Europe will try to ensure that Ukraine is in the best possible position in peace negotiations.

He stated that, under the deal with Trump, the US would now “massively” to Ukraine “not only air defense, but also missiles and ammunition paid by Europeans”.

Asked if long -range missiles for Ukraine were under discussion, Rutte said: “It’s both defensive and offensive. Therefore, there are all types of weapons, but we have not argued in detail yesterday with the president. This is really being worked by the Pentagon, by the supreme commander ally in Europe, along with the Ukrainians.”
