The University of Porto (U.Porto) prepared a strategic study for the total conversion of the internal waistway (VCI), with traffic congestion problems, which is based on the creation of gardens, bike lanes, housing e squaresthe institution announced this Tuesday.
The strategic study, prepared by teachers and researchers from U.Porto, intends to progressively transform urban self -established a sustainable, integrated and multimodal urban infrastructure, said in a statement.

In order to reposition this way as a structuring and cohesion element of the city, U.Porto proposes the creation of a Great Urban Green Ringstructured along the stroke of VCI, through the valorization of green spaces and articulation with parks, contributing to biodiversity, air quality and mitigation of heat island effect.
Quoted in the statement, the landscape architect and professor at the Faculty of Sciences of U.Porto José Miguel Lameiras He also explained that the study defends “the requalification of the main road nodes of VCI as multifunctional zones, capable of welcoming new public spaces, accessible housing, collective equipment and, in particular, Controlled flood retention basins”.
The view of this new urban corridor is based on principles of ecological planning and sustainable mobility and is inspired by international success cases, he pointed out.
The project also includes the creation of a Multimodal Urban Transportation Systemintegrating public transportation in dedicated channel, two road bands, segregated bike lanes and pedestrian paths.
“This system will allow it to carry a significantly higher number of people, with greater efficiency and less environmental impact than the current road model,” said José Miguel Lameiras.
“At the same time, will contribute to reduce congestion and improve the city’s internal mobilityoffering reliable alternatives of public transport, including for the pendulant movements that come and go from Porto, ”he added.
