Cucumbers are one of the most popular vegetables in Polish gardens. Unfortunately, in the summer many people make cardinal mistakes when watering them. One of them is enough, and the plants will start to rot instead of abundantly fruit.
The best time for watering cucumbers in the summer season are morning hours – between 6:00 and 9:00. At this time, the soil is still cool, and the water has time to penetrate deep into the soil before it evaporates under the influence of sunlight. Evening watering is risky, because the night moisture promotes the development of fungal diseases. On hot days, do not water the cucumbers in the middle of the day when the soil is heated. A sudden change of temperature can damage delicate roots, and the water will evaporate too quickly, without benefits.

Cucumbers have a relatively shallow root system, which is why they require regular but moderate watering. The soil should be moist to a depth of about 20 cm. It is enough water for plants to have access to the needed moisture, but at the same time they are not exposed to wetting. Too superficial watering leads to the drying of the roots, while too intense – for rotting and dying plants.
One of the most common mistakes is pouring cucumbers on the leaves. Wet leaves, especially during sunny weather, can burn, and in colder conditions – become a source of fungal diseases. Always direct the water stream directly to the ground, bypassing the above -ground parts of the plants. The watering can with a narrow tip or drip irrigation system, which supplies water directly to the roots, works best.

Many people water the cucumbers with water straight from the well or from the garden hose, which can be very cold in the summer. It’s a serious mistake. Cool water causes a thermal shock and can disturb the development of the root system and even lead to inhibition of plant growth. Always use the water. Preferably rainwater, which warmed up in the tank. If you use tap or well water, let it warm up in a watering can for a few hours before watering.
Watering cucumbers will only be effective if the soil has a good structure and allows excess water outflow. Otherwise, the roots will quickly start to rot. Before planting cucumbers, it is worth enriching the soil with compost and sand that will improve its permeability. Mulching with straw, bark or agrotextile is an additional way to stop moisture in soil and reduce evaporation. What’s more, the litter protects the plants against the heating of the ground and hinders the development of weeds.
