The President (PT) signed, on Monday (14), the decree regulating the Reciprocity Law. The measure comes days after the American leader, , impose rates on Brazilian products. The decree will be published in this Tuesday’s edition (15) of the Federal Official Gazette. The government did not disclose the content. The reciprocity law was passed in April this year by the National Congress, a measure that changed the legislation, since before there was no framework that allowed the government to retaliate another country for measures of this nature, only resorting to the World Trade Organization (WTO). It allows Brazil to tax countries that impose tariffs harmful to the national economy. Trump’s tariff over Brazil is valid on August 1st.

“The law authorizes the executive to adopt protection measures of the country when extemporaneous and extraordinary measures are unilaterally adopted by other countries against Brazil,” Rui Costa, chief minister of the Civil House, told the Planalto Palace. . The measure was officially communicated in a letter sent to President Lula, and represents a direct retaliation to the alleged attacks of Brazil to freedom of expression and treatment given to former President Jair Bolsonaro.

In the letter addressed to the Planalto Palace, Trump spared no criticism of the conduct of court proceedings in Brazil. He classified the actions against Bolsonaro as a “witch hunt” which, he said, “must be closed immediately.” Trump’s decision was criticized by the Lula administration, which considered the measure as a political retaliation.
