They cost the lives of 1,180 people in the last 60 days in the number of many deaths recorded in 2024, the Ministry of the Environment announced today.
Most of the victims were over 65 years old and over half of them were women, according to figures cited by the ministry.
The most affected areas were Galicia, La Rioha, Astourias and Gadabria – all in the northern part of the country where temperatures in the summer months were not high, but in recent years this has changed.
Like other Western European countries, Spain has been faced with extreme heat in recent weeks, as the thermometer often showed over 40 degrees Celsius.
114 The dead in the same period of 2024
The 1,180 people died of heat -related causes from May 16th to July 13th. By comparison, in the same period of 2024 the dead from heatwaves only reached 114. The number of deaths increased dramatically in the first week of July, based on data from the Charles III Institute of Health.
During these two months, 76 emergencies were issued for extreme heat in various parts of the country, and no one had been issued last year.
Last summer, a total of 2,191 deaths were attributed to the causes of high temperatures.
On July 9, a scientific analysis said that about 2,300 people died from the heat in 12 European cities during the ten -day heatwave that lasted until July 2. It is not clear, however, whether the study of London’s IMPIART scientists and the London Hygiene and Tropical Hygiene School uses the same methodology as the Spanish Institute.
