The president of the, repeated on Tuesday (15) that he sees a “witch hunt” in the judgment of () in Brazil.
Answering the journalist’s question as he left the White House, Trump asked if Bolsonaro would go to trial now and when he would start, adding the comment: “He hasn’t been convicted yet, right?”
Then the president said he is not a friend of Bolsonaro, but believes he is a “good man” and is not dishonest.
“Look, he’s not like a friend of mine. He’s someone I know, and I know him as a representative of millions, Brazilians. They are great people, and he loves the country, and he fought these people a lot, and they want to put him in prison,” he said.
“I think this is a witch hunt, and I think it’s very unfortunate, and no one is happy with what Brazil is doing, because Bolsonaro was a respected president,” the US president repeated.
This is the second time Trump talks about Bolsonaro, besides the statements he has made on social networks.
The Republican announced last week the 50% surcharge on all Brazilian products from August 1 in a letter criticized the Supreme Court (STF) and left Bolsonaro’s defense.
Trump opens the letter mentioning his relationship with Bolsonaro, whom he calls “highly respected leader.” He criticizes the former president’s trial by the Supreme Court in the case of the coup plot classifying him as a “witch hunt” and “international shame.”
It also accuses the Supreme Court of violating freedom of expression, citing “secret and illegal” censorship orders against American social networks.
The Supreme, especially with decisions by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, has ordered in recent years the removal of content and profiles accused of disseminating fake news about the electoral system and attacking democracy. Some of these orders involved companies such as X (former Twitter), Youtube and Meta.
The main measure announced by Trump is the imposition of a 50% surcharge on all exported products in Brazil to the United States from August 1, 2025. The measure is presented in response to what it has classified as commercial injustices practiced by Brazil.
