PS is in mourning. Former Secretary of State and vice president of the PS parliamentary group was 72 years old.
The former deputy of the Socialist Party (PS) and former secretary of state José Junqueiro died this Wednesday to 72 years.
The death of the former leader and vice president of the PS parliamentary group was transmitted to the deputies by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, before the period of voting.
“I just be informed that José Junqueiro died, with whom I had the privilege of being a deputy in previous legislatures. I sign the condolences to the PS and his family, certain that I express the feeling of regret of the entire Assembly of the Republic,” said Aguiar-Branco.
Former Secretary of State, retired professor at the University of Aveiro, adept at Sporting and former councilor at the Viseu Chamber, José Junqueiro was consecutively elected PS deputy between 1995 and 2015always for the circle of Viseu.
Among other political functions, Junqueiro was Secretary of State for Local Administration (2009-2011) in the second government led by José Sócrates and Secretary of State for Maritime and Port Administration (2000-2002) in the second executive of António Guterres. It was with Junqueiro in office that it took place in Entre-os-Rios, who killed 59 people on March 4, 2001.
Several times he was a member of the National Secretariat of the PS, socialist coordinator at the Social Equipment Commission and led the Viseu Federation.
From the political point of view, at PS, José Junqueiro was a socialist leader near the first of António Guterres leadership between 1992 and December 2001 and then António José Seguro between 2011 and 2014.
With António Costa’s victory in the socialist primary elections in September 2014, in which he defeated António José Seguro, José Junqueiro ceased to be a candidate for deputy of the PS after the 2015 legislative elections and moved away from the first line of political life.
