NBA starts study to expand alloy beyond the 30 current teams

Commissioner Adam Silver confirms economic feasibility analysis for possible addition of franchises, without setting schedule for decision

The (National Basketball Association) started a study to evaluate the expansion of the league in addition to the 30 current franchises, according to the commissioner on Wednesday (16.Jul.2025).

Two committees were formed to examine the economic and operational aspects of the possible addition of new teams. There is no deadline for a decision yet.

Seattle and Las Vegas are pointed out as favorite to receive new franchises, although no city has been confirmed. Portland was also cited, but would face the challenge of needing a new arena. The last NBA expansion was held in 2004, with the entrance of the then Charlotte Bobcats.

The possible expansion of the league happens in a moment of high appreciation of franchises. Boston Celtics sold for $ 6.1 billion, while lakers were valued at $ 10 billion. The NBA also signed a new media rights contract of $ 76 billion for 11 years with Amazon, ESPN e NBC.

A NBCwhich will transmit the League again after more than two decades, reported significant growth in the volume of advertising sold for NBA games. The station said 25% of sponsors are new in the traditional television environment.
