Israeli Prime Minister faces a two-day deadline to try to negotiate and avoid the final departure of the party
The recent decision of the Torah’s United Judaism Party to leave the governing coalition in lighting a political crisis that can have serious implications for the Prime Minister’s government . With the departure of the party, which has six members in Parliament, the Netanyahu coalition now has a very tight parliamentary majority. The coalition now has 61 parliamentarians out of a total of 120, which represents only one deputy more than necessary to maintain the absolute majority in Congress. Faced with this delicate situation, Netanyahu faces a two -day deadline to try to negotiate and avoid the definitive departure of the party. In addition, he faces the threat of another party, the far-right Otzma Yehudit, which has 11 deputies and also considers the coalition.
The central point of discord is a bill that may oblige ultra -portodox Jews to provide compulsory military service, something that is currently not required of this community, unlike the rest of the Israeli population. Religious parties, including Torah’s United Judaism, seek to maintain the exemption for ultraortodox Jews, which has generated tensions within the coalition.
Even though Netanyahu cannot resolve the situation immediately, he will have a breath, as the Israeli Parliament will enter summer recess in late July. The three-month recess may provide enough time for the Prime Minister to negotiate and avoid the fall of the government at least in the next quarter. During this period, Netanyahu will be able to seek solutions and alliances that guarantee the stability of his government.
