GENIAL Survey/Quaest released on Wednesday (16) shows that most Brazilians consider a mistake of US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on Brazil because of the trial of Jair Bolsonaro (PL). According to the survey, 72% disagree with the American justification and 53% support Lula’s reaction (PT), which announced reciprocity measures.
The letter sent by Trump to Lula, which informs the decision to surcharge in 50% Brazilian products from August, reached 66% of respondents. Only 19% said they agreed with the republican measure, while 39% disagree with Lula’s retaliation and 8% could not answer.
In the clash between the two sides, 44% claim that Lula and the PT are right, while 29% support Bolsonaro and his allies. Another 15% consider that neither side is correct and 12% did not opine.

The survey also investigated the reasons attributed to the measure of the US. For 26%, Lula’s criticism of Trump at the BRICS meeting motivated the American reaction. Another 22% cited STF shares against Bolsonaro, 17% mentioned the performance of Eduardo Bolsonaro in the US, 10% pointed to Supreme Measures against Big Techs and 25% did not know or did not respond.
Among respondents, 55% estimate that Lula caused Trump during the BRICS meeting, while 31% disagree. Already 57% consider that the US president does not have the right to criticize Bolsonaro’s judgment in the Supreme Court, compared to 36% they claim the opposite.
The impact of the rate worries the population: 79% believe that tariffs will hurt their lives and 59% think Trump will maintain the decision.
