BRASILIA (Reuters)-Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), Geraldo Alckmin, said on Wednesday that the negotiation between Brazil and the United States about 50% tariff on Brazilian products announced by US President Donald Trump is urgent.

At a news conference after a meeting on the subject with representative entities, Alckmin said the Brazilian government is still awaiting response from the US authorities and considered no problem if there is a need to extend the deadline for the negotiations.

“We want negotiation, it is urgent, the good thing is that it is resolved in the coming days. If there is need, in this negotiation, to extend, I see no problem,” he said.

Regarding the investigation opened by the United States Commerce Representative of possible “unfair” trade practices in Brazil, Alckmin said the government will give the explanations requested.

“This is not the first time that an investigation has been done, this has been done before, Brazil has responded and the subject was closed,” he said.

Citing topics used as arguments by the US government to open the investigation, the vice president mentioned that deforestation in Brazil is falling, the deadlines for intellectual property analysis have been reduced and the pix is a successful mechanism.
