With the summer coming and thousands of homes temporarily unoccupied due to vacation, residence robberies are increasing again. Many continue to believe that a good door or expensive lock is enough to keep the thieves away. However, a locksmith warns that there are simple gestures that continue to be devalued, and can make all the difference.
The most used tricks by thieves
Anxo Martinez, locksmith with over 15 years of experience in Corunha, explained to the newspaper La Voz de Galicia that criminals continue to explore the same faults as always. One of the most common is rising to the last floors of buildings and checking one by one if there are doors only against.
In most situations, robberies occur in the morning when residents are working. “If the lock is not locked, it is very easy to enter, even if it is the best door in the world,” warns the expert. Therefore, he insists: “Taking care of security starts by closing the door to the key, even if you will only buy bread.”
The error of leaving the key on the door
Another habit that seems innocent, but represents risk, is to leave the keys placed inside the door. This practice may prevent access in an emergency, especially if the cylinder is not double clutch. This type of mechanism allows you to open the door even when there is already a key inside and is especially suitable for people with reduced mobility.
Two turns to the key: myth or truth?
Many doubts also arise as to the number of turns given to the key. According to Anxo Martínez, this is irrelevant: “There is no difference between going or two turns. If the thief can spin the cylinder, he will do so easily.” The advice of course: install two different locks, which can even work with the same key.
Door -type
Confusion between armored and covered doors is another point to clarify. The armored, he explains, “is the typical apartment door, with wood rim.” Already the co -worked is metallic in full, including the rim, although it is often covered with finishes that mimic wood. However, it emphasizes that even the best door will serve much if the set is not coherent, it is also necessary to choose a good cylinder and a proper protective shield.
Out of town houses are more vulnerable
In urban buildings, the risks are more associated with the habit of not locking the door, but outside cities, vulnerability grows. Housing, for example, are particularly exposed. “Yes, there is nothing to do. A lock is for nothing if they enter a window,” he says.
The most effective gesture is free
Although more and more people turn to alarms, many remain reluctant due to the monthly cost of the service. Still, and according to, the locksmith considers that the most effective gesture is free: “Always close to the key, even if you only buy bread.”
