Allows to welcome rockets capable of traveling long distances
Through satellite images you can see a new construction. The new Marítimo pier is now completed at North Korea’s main space rocket station – which “allows the transport of larger -dimensional rocket components than those previously possible by iron path,” according to the Iceye satellites operator, quoted by Reuters agency.
According to North Korean media, in 2022 North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, ordered the modernization and expansion of the Sohae rocket launching station to ensure the launch of various rockets, including those capable of transporting military spy satellites.
It was through this Sohae station that spy satellites were launched, as well as other rocket tests, according to Iceye. Now the station can welcome rockets capable of traveling long distances.
The new pier has placed a satellite in orbit and brought the possibility of testing various missile components, including rocket engines and space launch vehicles that require a technology similar to what is used in intercontinental ballistic missiles, according to South Korean and American leaders.
According to Iceye it was needed more than two years, about 28 months, so that everything was ready and according to the initial reports of the site.
The images of the last July 9 show a new quay and ships, something that, also according to Iceye, can help improve Sohae’s logistical abilities.
The expansion should not be here. According to 38 North, which provides analysis of North Korea based in Washington, there is still work on the expansion of road and rail infrastructures in the facilities. Satellite images captured by Planet Labs also reveal what seems to be a pier under construction in the coastal zone.
In May 2024, the city of Pyongyang failed in its attempt to launch a military spy satellite on the base of Sohae. The North Korean leader promised the spatial recognition project, which he considers crucial.
Russia is likely to be helping North Korea in its satellite program in exchange for troop sending to support the armed conflict against Ukraine, according to South Korean authorities.
North Korea, which has accused the United States and its allies of threatening them with “hostile policies,” argues and states that the military activities that carry are a sovereign right and are intended only for self-defense.
