The Olympic medal of SKI Cross Audun Groenvolt died after being hit by lightning, the Norwegian Ski Federation announced on Wednesday. He was 49 years old and won the bronze medal at Vancouver games in 2010.
“It is with great sadness that we received the news of Audun Groenvolt’s premature death. Former National Alpino Ski Cross athlete was recently hit by lightning during a mountain trip,” the federation said in a statement without specifying where the incident occurred.
According to the note, Groenvised was “quickly taken to the hospital and received treatment for the injuries he suffered in the fall of a lightning,” but would die on Tuesday night. According to AP, Gronvd was on summer holidays with his family. The athlete was married to Kristin Tandberg Haugsjå and had three children.
Groenvolt was a member of the Norwegian team of Alpino skiing before devoting herself to free style and ski cross. He climbed to the podium as an alpine skier in the World Cup, ending third in a descent in Serra Nevada, Spain, in 1999.
In addition, it won a bronze medal in SKI Cross in the 2005 world championships and the 2007 SKI Cross Cup.
After finishing his career, he became coach of the national team and television commentator.
“Norwegian ski lost a prominent figure, which meant a lot to the alpine and free -style communities,” said Federation President Tove Moe Dyrhaug, adding that his death creates “a huge emptiness.”
