Vienna – Switzerland has been trying for years to have the “Emmentaler” cheese variety registered as the original designation – and encounters resistance in the EU. Now Austria is on the side of the EU Commission and has submitted an application for approval as an intervener to the European Court. If Switzerland prevails, even names such as “Austrian Emmentaler” could be prohibited – retrospectively for up to five years, said the Ministry of Agriculture.
