Uber is joining the electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid and the Autonomous Steering Technology Startup Nuro to launch a fleet of robotaxis.
Uber announced on Thursday that she or her outsourced partners will buy and operate Lucid Gravity SUVs equipped with Nuro Driver technology on her shared ride network. The company intends to launch the first vehicle in 2026, in a large unidentified US city, with plans to deploy at least 20,000 robotaxis over six years.
The pitching company has also announced that it is making separate investments from hundreds of millions of dollars in both Lucid and Nuro. This financing will include US $ 300 million for Lucid, which will be used in part to update its mounting line to integrate Nuro’s hardware in Gravity vehicles, according to the electric vehicle manufacturer.

Lucid’s shares fired 34% – the biggest gain in more than two and a half years – to $ 3.07 at 9:35 am on the regular trading session in New York. Uber’s actions have changed little.
Separately, Lucid also announced plans for a reverse unfolding of actions in proportion from 1 to 10, subject to the approval of shareholders.
The Lucid-Nuro Agreement adds to more than a dozen partnerships that Uber announced with autonomous and automakers’ vehicle technology developers, including Waymo and Volkswagen Group of America, while seeking to be the preferred business app for robotáxis. Earlier this week, Uber announced a partnership with Chinese Baidu Autonomous Vehicle Manufacturer to deploy robotaxis in several markets outside the US. Currently, autonomous races are available by the Uber app in Phoenix, Austin, Atlanta and Abu Dhabi.

Uber’s substantial investments reinforce its strategy change, moving away from the internal development of autonomous technology, as it did under the co-founder and former CEO Travis Kalanick, in favor of partnerships and investments in companies specializing in autonomous vehicles. Uber has already monetized some of its shareholders in companies such as Aurora Innovation Inc., specializing in self -employment, to finance future investments in the driverless vehicle ecosystem, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said.
The competition is intensifying in the still nascent robotaxis market, with the Giant of Tesla Inc. electric vehicles launching its promised service for a long time in Austin last month, and CEO Elon Musk promising to expand to other cities.
Uber made its first partnership with Nuro in 2022 for food delivery robots. The following year, Nuro changed its focus to build and climb personalized autonomous vehicles to develop autonomous software.

The partnership with Uber also represents an important customer for Lucid, one of the few purely focused on US electric vehicles, while working to popularize Gravity, its second vehicle model. The company has been striving to increase production and deliveries, estimating producing 20,000 vehicles by 2025, more than double the previous year.
Roboxis prototypes developed by Lucid and Nuro are already operating in the closed circuit of Nuro in Las Vegas.
Lucid’s interim CEO Marc Winterhoff said Uber has chosen its SUV because the company can integrate the necessary hardware into its factory. Nuro software will be added as soon as Uber receives vehicles. Winterhoff stated in an investor teleconference in May that the company was in advanced discussions with partners on the use of gravity for self -employed vehicles.

“This is a step on our journey to expand our technological leadership of electric vehicles and licensing to partnerships in other areas,” Winterhof told Bloomberg this week. “A lot can happen in six years. I really see it as the first starting point.”
Lucid has also worked on advanced driver assistance systems and announced earlier this year a partnership with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia.
Winterhoff said the company still plans to work on its own autonomous and driver assistance technology. This week, Lucid announced separately that it is adding direction without hands and assistance to the track exchange to its set of software.
