Luís Montenegro is expected to announce the new governor of Banco de Portugal, with several names excluded and others. The decision is viewed as a priority and should be taken in the coming days and may be announced after a meeting of the Council of Ministers.
Prime Minister Luís Montenegro is expected to announce this Friday who is the new governor of Banco de Portugal, even on top of the deadline to do so.
To what SIC has learned, the list of possible successors of Mario Centeno is excluded from the names of Vítor Gaspar, Ricardo Reis, Álvaro Santos Pereira and Cristina Casalinho.
The process is being conducted in the narrowest circle of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro.
Among the names still considering the place of Centeno are João Cabral dos Santos, an economist working at the New York Federal Reserve, and António Ramalho, who will no longer be incompatible from 1 August, after being executive president of Novo Banco.
A meeting of the Council of Ministers is scheduled for tomorrow, but it is not certain that the subject is in the order of work.
Still, Luís Montenegro intends to shorten the process and close the choice of the new governor of Banco de Portugal in the coming days. The succession of Centeno is seen as a priority and should not drag itself for much longer.
Centeno with an eye on the European Central Bank
If Centeno leaves the scene, as it seems that yes, it will be the first governor in 25 years other than reappointed. However, the closed door may pave it to the European Central Bank.
