According to the CNN Lourival Sant’Anna International Analyst Assessment in the Program WWDonald Trump raised the tone of criticism of Brazilian institutions in a new letter directed to Jair Bolsonaro, using a language that suggests authoritarianism by referring to Brazil as a “regime”.

Trump’s terminology analysis reveals a significant climbing over the previous correspondence sent to Lula.

While in the first letter the criticism was limited to the Supreme Court, in the new Trump statement expanded his accusations, referring to Brazil as a “censorship regime.”

Meaning of the term

In the language of political science, the term “regime” carries a pejorative connotation and is commonly associated with authoritarian systems. The choice of this specific word suggests a context where institutions are not independent and elections are not considered fair.

The letter was released after Lula’s interview with CNN Internacional, in which he stated that Trump was not elected “emperor of the world” and made comparisons between the capitol invasion in the United States and events in Brazil.

According to the analyst, the timing of Trump’s demonstration is significant, as there were no other international impact events that justified the return to the theme, indicating a possible direct response to Lula’s statements in the interview with Christiane Amanpour.
