Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (Supreme Court) cited writer Machado de Assis and US President Abraham Lincoln, murdered in 1865, in the decision in which he ordered precautionary measures to the former president (PL) for coercion, obstruction and attack on national sovereignty.
The former president will now have to wear an electronic anklet and will be monitored 24 hours a day.
In the decision, Moraes cites ax phrase in which the author says that “national sovereignty is the most beautiful thing in the world, on the condition of being sovereignty and being national.”
Next, the STF minister argues that national sovereignty “cannot, should not and will never be vilified, negotiated or extorted” because it is one of the foundations of the Federative Republic of Brazil, as expressed in the Constitution.
Moraes continues and says that the Supreme Court “will always be absolutely adamant in defending national sovereignty and its commitment to democracy, fundamental rights, the rule of law, the independence of the national judiciary and the Brazilian constitutional principles.”
In this passage, he argues that Lincoln’s lesson is remembered, 16th President of the United States, who said that “the most important principles can and should be inflexible.”
