Juul received authorization from Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to sell its electronic cigarettes in the US.
The FDA informed by email that it authorized Jul’s electronic cigarette device, along with replacement cartridges with tobacco and menthol flavors, at 3% and 5% nicotine concentrations, following a revision by the agency’s pre-market tobacco product request. Sweet and fruity flavors remain prohibited in the market.
Jul, a closed capital company, was once the dominant leader in the US electronic cigarette market, thanks to its elegant USB -style device and flavors nicotine pods. Its products remained available in the US during the FDA revision, but its growth was harmed by accusations that the company aimed at undoers. In 2022, Juul agreed to pay $ 1.2 billion to end thousands of processes related to the use of vaping by young people.

FDA’s authorization is “a very important milestone” for the company and its mission “to make cigarettes obsolete,” Jul’s CEO KC Crosthwaite said in an interview. The Juul has submitted more than 110 scientific studies to support its request and sees its products as a tool for adults who want to quit smoking.
O Wall Street Journal released the news previously.
Juul showed evidence showing that its products with tobacco and menthol flavors comply with federal tobacco laws and help adult smokers exchange cigarettes for their products, FDA said. This included a two -year study that showed high rates of smokers migrating to Juul’s tobacco and menthol flavors.

The decision does not mean that the products are safe or “approved by the FDA.” The agency said it will continue to closely monitor Juul’s marketing to ensure that it is not directed to underage users.
The use of vaping is growing faster than the number of smokers that leave cigarettes, according to recent data from US Disease Control and Prevention Centers (CDC). The number of adults in the US who smoke exclusively cigarettes decreased by 6.8 million between 2017 and 2023, according to a CDC report released earlier this year. However, approximately 7.2 million adults began to use electronic cigarettes exclusively, according to the study.
FDA authorized the sale of only a small number of vaping products – all with tobacco flavors or menthol – from a few companies. This has made room for a flood of illicit products, especially disposable vapes with flavors from China, who are thriving in convenience and online stores. Regulators have had difficulty accompanying.

“There are a significant number of illicit operators who have not been through this process,” said Crosthwaite.
Juul also competes with companies such as British American Tobacco and Altria Group, which previously had a participation in Juul.
Altria’s shares fell 1.8% at 12:07 pm on the New York trading session on Thursday, erasing previous gains. British American Tobacco’s shares fell 1.6% in the UK trading session.
