German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Friday expressed doubts about the possible accession of Ukraine into the European Union (EU) until 2034. According to him, its accession is unlikely to have an impact on the medium -term financial plans of the block, which are set just this year. “The absolute priority for us is first and foremost to do everything to end this war. While Ukraine is under the attack and in war, entering the European Union is of course virtually impossible,” Merz said alongside Romanian President Nicušor Dan on Friday in Berlin.
“Then we will talk about the restoration of Ukraine, but it will take several years. This is unlikely to be affected by the current EU financial outlook. However, the aim is to bring Ukraine as close as possible to the EU and to attach it to this community, ”he added.
President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula Von Der Leyen said in Kiev in February that if Ukraine continued in reforms at the current pace and at the same quality, she could enter the EU a year before 2030. Ukraine has been a candidate country since 2022.
