STF Minister determined precautionary measures such as the use of an electronic anklet and prohibition of access to social networks
Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Court (STF), cited writer Machado de Assis by justifying the imposition of precautionary measures against former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), such as the use of an electronic anklet.
The former president (Federal Police) this Friday (18.Jul.2025). The search and seizure warrants were fulfilled at Bolsonaro’s house and at addresses linked to the PL (Liberal Party).
In the decision, signed on Thursday (17.Jul.2025), Moraes wrote that “The Immortal Machado de Assis proclaimed that”: “National sovereignty is the most beautiful thing in the world, with the condition of being sovereignty and being national.”
(1839–1908) was one of the biggest names in Brazilian literature. Founder of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, is the author of works as Dom Casmurro e Posthumous Memories of Brás Cubas. He was a journalist, short story writer, chronicler, novelist, poet and theatrologist, recognized for his refined social criticism and his ironic and innovative style.
Then he stated that “National sovereignty cannot, should not and will never be vilified, negotiated or extorted”and that the STF will be “Absolutely inflexible” in defense of the Constitution and the rule of law. Read (PDF – 2 MB).

Bolsonaro is a defendant in a criminal case at the Supreme Court (Supreme Court) that investigates the central nucleus in an attempt to coup in 2022.

If it is convicted of crimes of armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup, damage qualified by violence and serious threat against public assets and deterioration of listed assets, the penalty may exceed 40 years in prison.
In 2023, the former president was convicted by the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) for abuse of political power and misuse of the media. He is ineligible until 2030. In the interview, he said the processes are to get him out of the political game because he appears with advantage in polls. Stated that in 2022, when he was a candidate for reelection, the TSE “Weighed the hand” against him.
What the defense says
In a note, Bolsonaro’s defense said that “Received with surprise and indignation the imposition of severe precautionary measures” against the former president and who has not yet had access to the decision of Moraes.
