The Vice President of the Republic and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), said on Thursday (17) that Brazil was not responsible for “creating the problem” with the United States, but will work to solve it.
Alckmin cited the 50% rate announced by Donald Trump about the importation of Brazilian products.
“We do not create the problem, but we will work to solve it. Brazil does not give up its sovereignty or the separation of powers. Brazil gets along with all countries and goes to negotiation,” said the vice president in a video published on social networks.
Alckmin again stated that there is no “no reason” for the surcharge to Brazilian products.
Within the government, the vice president is one of the main responsible for the elaboration of the Brazilian response to Trump’s tariff. He commands the interministerial committee created by the federal government to discuss the matter.
Since Tuesday (15), Alckmin has met with representatives of the national productive sector to dialogue. The government also had meetings with US companies to deal with tariffs.
The vice president argues that, before the government makes any decision, it is essential to hear the private sector, which maintains direct interlocution with the US market.
