On Saturday, Israel downplayed the promise of temporary Syrian President Ahmad Šara that the new leadership of Syria would protect the minorities there. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, in the status on the X – in response to the latest sectarian violence in the Yugosyrian province of Suwajda, stated that being a minority in contemporary Syria – Kurdo, Drúz, Alavit or Christian – is “very dangerous”.
Saar recalled that this fact “has been repeatedly proven over the past six months”, referring to the violence that broke out this spring – shortly after power in Syria took the Islamist leadership under Shar’s leadership. This wave of violence was the first faced members of the Alavites sect – they are also deposited by President Bashar Assad, who went to Russia in front of the Islamist insurgents in December 2024.
In April, it was followed by violence against the Drus communities, not only in the province of Suwajda, but also in the suburbs of Damascus. It was a series of extrajudicial executions, looting and burning houses. Drúzski leaders then pointed out the inactivity of government security forces against Islamist militia and expressed a deep distrust of the government.
The government has deployed units
The latest escalation of the voltage occurred on 13 July. According to the Syrian Observatory Center for Human Rights, this wave of violence required more than 700 dead, including civilians, Drúz fighters and government forces.
The Syrian Government began to place government security units in the mid -July in mid -July – in mid -July – after a longer absence – after a longer absence, which led to tensions not only with some of the Drus leaders, but also with Israel, who has so far refused Syrian military activity at his borders. Israel has therefore launched artillery and air attacks on the positions of the Syrian army, including goals near the Presidential Palace in Damascus. Jerusalem claims that these attacks were a reaction to the activities of militias near the Israeli borders and their aim was to protect Drus civilians. However, Damascus described Israeli intervention as a violation of Syria sovereignty.
According to Saar, on the basis of this development, the international community has “the obligation to guarantee the security and rights of minorities in Syria and make the re -adoption of Syria into the family of nations by their protection.”
AFP recalled that Israel, who has its own numerous Drus community, justified his actions defending the drusters in Syria. However, some diplomats and analysts argue that the main goal of Israel is to weaken the army in Syria, which is its historical opponent. The new regime in Syria, although it has Islamist roots, has long faced criticism for insufficient protection of minorities that are increasingly facing violence and discrimination, which complicates attempts to build Syria as an inclusive state.
