Manchester I was hiding a estrada built about 2 thousand yearsfrom the times of the expansion of Roman Empire. It was discovered.
During excavations on a street in the neighborhood of Castlefield, a team of archaeologists discovered a well -preserved Romada road – which was only a few centimeters from the surface in the center of the English city.
Archaeologist Graham Mottershead, who was leading the excavation, talks about a discovery “Absolutely surprising.”
“It is certainly the best Roman archeology I’ve seen in the city center in the last 20 years or more,” adds Ian Miller of the Greater Manchester archaeological service.
The fact that the road is well preserved is considered something remarkable – Since the compacted gravel structure was so close to the surface.
The investigators also found artifacts of that time, as industrial ovens and household objects.
Ceramics and glassware, of the first three centuries DC, were essential to give a I estimated of the period of use of the road by Roman populations in Manchester.
Archaeologists estimate that this road was the main exit route to the north of the region; It was close to the Roman Fort Mamucium.
