1. Xique-Xique (BA)
Among the Brazilian cities of the Northeastern Sertão, Xique-Xique draws attention by the unusual name. Located in Bahia, its name comes from a typical Caatinga cactus type. Of indigenous origin, the term represents the climate and vegetation of the region well. Nevertheless, many residents have never heard this explanation.
2. Pau Grande (RJ)
The name of this city has generated many jokes over the years, but its origin is quite simple. Pau Grande, Magé district, in Rio de Janeiro, was named after a huge tree in the region, used as a point of reference by travelers. What’s more, it was there that the famous player Mané Garrincha was born. Even so, even today many have no idea how this unusual name came about.
3. Oiapoque (AP)
Known for being “where Brazil begins”, Oiapoque is in Amapá, on the border with French Guiana. But what does Oiapoque mean? The word comes from the indigenous term “Oiapoque” or “Oiapoque-Y”, which can mean “water arm” or “Rio das Águas Forte”, in reference to the river that cuts the city. It is a name full of history, directly linked to the geography and culture of the region.

Among the Brazilian cities of the far south, Chuí is the last before the Uruguay border. The name is short and sound, and has probable origin in Tupi-Guarani. Some scholars believe it means “Rio Pequeno” or “river that sings”. Even though it is a small town, the name continues to arouse the curiosity of those who pass by.
5. Pindamonhangaba (SP)
One of the most difficult Brazilian cities to write and pronounce, Pindamonhangaba is in the interior of São Paulo. The name has Tupi origin and means “place where hooks are made.” The word is linked to indigenous culture and fishing activities that were common in the region. Although the meaning is known to the few, the name has even become a joke for its complexity.
6. ARACIAT (CE)
On the coast of Ceará, Aracati is a charming city, full of history and culture. But her name also comes from Tupi and means “good wind” or “pleasant wind”, alluding to the constant breeze that blows in the region. It is a beautiful, poetic name, but few people know its real meaning.
