Torrential rains that hit the five days left at least 17 dead and 11 missing, according to the country’s government. One person died on Sunday after the collapse of his home during heavy rains and another was found dead after being taken by the river current in Gapyeong, a city northeast of Seoul, the Ministry of Interior and Security said. The ministry reported that 10 people were found dead and another four were missing in the city of Sancheong, in the south of the country, over the weekend, after heavy rains caused landslides, lading of houses and sudden floods in the region. A ministry report reported that a person died in the city of Gwangju, in the south of the country. Seven other people are still missing in Gwangju, Gapyeong and other places.

Earlier last week, a person also died when his car was buried by land and concrete after the collapse of a containment wall of an OSAN viaduct south of Seoul during heavy rains. Three other people were found dead in a submerged car, a river and a flooded basement in the southern Chungcheong province of Chungcheong. This Sunday, about 2 730 people were still out of their homes, the ministry report said. The rain stopped most of South Korea on Sunday, and storm alerts were suspended across the country, authorities according to. Since Wednesday, 16, the southern regions have received the accumulated of about 600 to 800 millimeters of rain, according to the Ministry’s report.

President Lee Jae Myung expressed deep solidarity to those who lost their loved ones and suffered financial losses due to heavy rains. Lee said the government would push that the most affected areas of rainfall are designated as special disaster zones. The designation would provide them with greater financial aid and other types of support for the government’s recovery.
