Onions are one of the most popular delicacies in Polish cuisine. We are happy to prepare it in various ways and add to many dishes. No wonder – it sharpens the taste of dishes. However, not every onion is suitable for consumption, of which few people are aware of. There are some features of this vegetable that indicate its toxicity and can seriously harm our health. Such onion should definitely be thrown into the trash. First of all, analyze the appearance of your onion. If you see signs of mold or rot on it, it is certainly not suitable for food. White or green coating on onions is nothing but mold. This, in turn, produces mycotoxin dangerous to human health, so even cutting out the moldy part of the vegetable does nothing.
Features of onions that are not suitable for consumption
Another feature of the onion indicating that it is not suitable for consumption is its rotting. This is the most obvious sign. If the onion is soft, spongy, has dark spots or leaks, and especially if it releases an unpleasant, rotten smell, you should definitely not eat it. The rotting is usually caused by bacteria or fungi. Another feature that disqualifies the onion to eat and can make the vegetable toxic for us, is the appearance of its pulp. If it has an unusual color, e.g. gray, brown or black, this may indicate a bacterial or fungal infection. Also pay attention to the smell of your onion. Well, healthy onion has a characteristic, sharp smell. If the onion releases an unpleasant, rotten, musty or other unusual smell, do not eat it.
