BRICS, a group that brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and other emerging countries, demonstrates a limited reaction capacity of the threat of US President Donald Trump to impose 50% tariffs on Brazilian products.

Despite the solidarity expressed by countries as Russia e Chinathe group has no effective mechanisms to retaliate such a measure.

The main demand that unites is the search for changes in the global governance system.

However, when it comes to specific commercial issues, the group has significant differences and does not operate as an integrated commercial block.

Scenario of Trade Negotiations

Several BRICS countries have already advanced in.

Indonesia has completed an agreement, while China and India are in advanced trading stages. Brazil, in turn, has not recorded significant progress in the negotiations.

Trade negotiations traditionally demand considerable time to complete. Trump’s proposal to close more than in a short period has been received with skepticism by industry experts, who consider the unrealistic deadline.

The current scenario is aggravated by the paralysis of World Trade Organization (WTO)which previously regulated the rules of international trade.

The organization’s internal courts, responsible for judging commercial demands, are inoperative due to the American veto to appoint new judges. Experts point out that successful trade relationships do not necessarily depend on geopolitical alignment.

Several countries maintain robust trade relationships even when they differ in political issues, as exemplified by trade relations between the United States and China, or between European Union and Russia.
