Ukraine President Volodimir Zelenski said today that his country proposed to Russia a new round of negotiations next week.
In his daily, evening profession to the Ukrainians, Zelenski said that Ukrainian Security Council secretary Rustem Umero “proposed a new meeting with the Russian side next week.” The date has not yet been specified.
The negotiations should be intensified and “to do everything to achieve a ceasefire,” the Ukrainian president added, declaring again to talk directly with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. “A meeting at the highest level is necessary to truly secure peace,” he said.
The meetings that preceded
The last, fruitless, meeting of both sides was in June. Then, Russia had again demanded from Ukraine to assign the four provinces to its eastern part and to renounce any military assistance from the West. Kiev rejected the “ultimatums” as he called them, and challenged Moscow’s willingness to negotiate the ceasefire.
In early July, however, the Kremlin said it was ready to continue negotiations with Ukraine, after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose sanctions on Russia and its commercial partners if they did not reach peace within 50 days and at the same time.
The only result of the two consecutive meetings in Constantinople by the Russian and Ukraine delegations was the agreement on the exchange of prisoners and fallen.
