How was the myth of Ukolak? The real truth about insects that frightened humanity since time immemorial

Ucholak is a fascinating insect of our gardens, which feeds on pests and poses no danger to humans. Myths about his ears invasion are only superstitious legends.

Every summer, with rising temperature and stay in gardens, nature or tents at festivals, one of the most demonized insects – Ukolak common (Forficula auricularia) is also returned again. He got his exceptional name precisely because of the old superstition that it allegedly crawls people in the ears and places eggs or damages the tympanic. But what’s the truth? Do we really have to worry about him, or is it just a harmless member of the insect empire?

Ucholak is a small night insect that belongs to the series of Dermapter. Its most striking feature is the tick growths at the end of the belly, which can at first glance look threatening. This anatomical feature serves mainly for defense and mating, not to attack a person. Ucholak feeds mainly on organic material – dead plants, flowers or small invertebrates. It can even play a positive role in the gardens as it feeds on aphids and other pests.

Origin of superstition

The myth that the ear is specifically seeking human ears was probably created in the Middle Ages. At that time, people could not explain cases where insects appeared in the ear. Ucholak has become a “favorite suspect” because of his name and night activity. The truth is, however, that the chalets have no biological predisposition to seek human ears. Yes, the chalet can sometimes crawl into a dark and damp place – for example, under the stones, flower pots or garden tools. In exceptional cases, it can also reach the human dwelling and accidentally find himself in bed or pillow.

Procedure for Insect Contact

However, if he also finds himself with a person, he does not go into his ear specifically – it has no meaning or function for insects. In rare cases, if any insects (whether the ear or other species) enter a person’s ear, it is recommended to maintain peace. It is important not to try to pull out insects with objects such as tweezers or cotton bar, as this can cause it to push it deeper. The best solution is to drip into the ear with a little oil or lukewarm water, which will suffocate insects and help it wash away. In the case of discomfort or unsuccessful attempt, it is always advisable to see a doctor.

The myth of the ear as a dangerous “ear intruder” belongs to the realm of legends rather than science. Although its appearance can look uncomfortable, it is in fact a harmless and even useful creature. Panic is therefore unnecessary – the ear will certainly not go into your ear. Instead of fear, it can be considered another fascinating article by the ecosystem of our gardens.
