The incident occurred at 13:16 local (06:16 in Lisbon), at Rua Jinbi, District of Xishan, when the driver, a 49 -year -old man identified as Li and resident in the city, who is the capital of Yunnan province, has embarked a cyclist and several pedestrians that circulated normally.
The suspect fled, colliding with other vehicles and people along the way, before being detained by police shortly after. The authorities indicated that the hypothesis was excluded that man was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The case is being treated as a runaway with escape, and an investigation is still underway to investigate the reasons for what happened.
The nine injured people were hospitalized, with four with slight injuries and five with superficial injuries, the authorities needed, who mentioned that everyone is in a stable state.
Although there is still no confirmation that it has been an intentional attack, the case arises in a context of increase in recent years of indiscriminate attacks on crowds in China, using white vehicles or weapons.
Among the most severe episodes are mass running over in November 2024 in the city of Zhuhai, a neighbor of Macao, which caused 35 dead and more than 40 injured. The author, motivated by a personal dispute, was executed in January, after conviction of capital penalty in December.
These acts are often described by the authorities and communication bodies as cases of “revenge against society,” where individuals frustrated by personal problems discharge their wrath on innocent civilians.
The Supreme Popular Prosecutor’s Office has recently promised “severe, rigorous and rapid punishments” for those responsible for this type of crimes, while the Ministry of Public Security has called for the reinforcement of prevention measures to “maintain social stability”.
Experts point to factors such as lack of mental health support, informative censorship and increasing social pressure as possible causes underlying this type of attacks.
These incidents contrast with the official speech of the Chinese authorities, which reiterate that China is “one of the safest countries in the world” – a perception widely shared by the population so far.
