The British government announced on Monday (21) the imposition of 137 new sanctions against strategic energy and oil sectors, in yet another effort to undermine the funding of war on. In a statement, he stated that the measures aim to “restrict the access of crucial oil revenues.” According to the British government, sanctions reach 135 oil tankers used by Russia to export oil clandestinely, moving about $ 24 billion since the beginning of 2024. In addition, the Company Intershipping Services LLC, responsible for registering Gabon’s flag boats, and Litasco Middle East DMCC, linked to the Russian oil. Together, they would have facilitated the transportation of up to $ 10 billion in oil per year to the Moscow regime.

“With every attack we launch against the Russian oil industry, we take another step toward a lasting peace in Ukraine and security in the UK and beyond,” the statement says. United Kingdom Foreign Minister David Lammy said the sanctions announced today “will drain the Russian War Box.” According to him, while Russian President “continues to postpone serious peace negotiations, the United Kingdom will continue using the full force of the sanction regime to increase economic pressure with each step.”

The statement also points out that Western sanctions have led to a continuous drop in Russia’s oil and gas revenues since 2022, with a loss of more than a third of the value in three years. “The wealth fund has been emptied, inflation is on the rise and government spending on defense and security fired,” says the text. The new measures were announced in parallel to last week’s decision of the United Kingdom and the European Union (EU) to reduce the Russian gross oil price ceiling.
