Attention to luggage: Get to know Ryanair's new policy that promises to turn air travel into an authentic 'bag hunting'

Ryanair will even increase paid bonus to employees who identify passengers with luggage outside the permitted dimensions, currently fixed at 1.50 euros for each infraction, the company’s CEO confirmed, in a strategy to strengthen luggage rules and reduce operating costs.

The focus of the Low-Cost airline remains in rigorous compliance with its policies. One way to ensure faster shipping is limited to the size of hand luggage, a rule that, according to the company, continues to be disrespected by a minority of passengers.

Ryanair workers currently receive a 1.50 euros bonus for each intercepted passenger with a suitable suitcase. However, the company admits to reinforce this incentive in the near future.

“Determination in eliminating the scourge”

In an official statement, the company explained that the goal is to end what it considers to be “the scourge of the overdue bags”, as they cause delays in the boarding process and create inequalities between passengers.

“We are determined to eliminate the scourge of the overdue bags, which delay boarding and are clearly unfair to 99% of our passengers who fulfill our luggage rules,” the company said.

Ryanair’s executive president, Michael O’leary, was even more direct, ensuring that the company is “thinking to increase [o bónus]”In order to discourage the rules by non -compliance by a small minority.

Fees can reach 75 euros

Speaking to the Irish season RTE, O’Leary recalled that the company is “happy to encourage our staff with a percentage of these bags”, considering that this practice could reduce the problem within a one or two years.

At this time, any passenger who has a suitcase with dimensions or weight higher than that permitted may be required to pay an extra fee of up to 75 euros, either at check-in or in the departure door.

All Ryanair tickets include the right to carry a free handbag as long as it does not exceed the defined limits: 10 pounds of weight and the maximum dimensions provided for by the company.

Appeal to passengers’ collaboration

The company’s message for passengers is clear: “Please comply with our generous luggage rules or will be charged at check-in or boarding.”

Ryanair’s bet in this incentive system is part of a cost containment logic and faster in the boarding process, allowing to keep the low tariffs that characterize the Irish carrier.

According to the British newspaper, by reinforcing internal surveillance and rewarding strict compliance with the rules, the company intends to avoid situations of abuse and maintain the confidence of passengers respecting the ticket conditions.
