Alongside Gustavo Petro, Pedro Sánchez, Yamandú Orsi and Gabriel Boric, the president of Brazil defended the need for concrete and urgent actions in the face of the advancement of undemocratic offensives in the world
O compared the recent wave of extremism in politics with the period of ascension of the in the 1930s of the last century. The statement was given to journalists, on the afternoon of Monday (21), in Santiago, in where Lula attended the high level meeting on the defense of democracy, organized by Chilean President Gabriel Boric.
“Why are we doing this movement? Because democracy is at risk with extremism as it occurred in the founding of the Nazi Party, with the issue of the rise of the rise [Adolf] Hitler. What we want is democracy, it doesn’t matter that it’s right -wing, that’s left, that’s the center. What we want is the exercise of democracy, with tolerance, with respect to diversity, with respect to ideological thinking, with respect to the culture of each country, with each religion. That’s what I want for Brazil, ”said Lula.
Also participating in the event were always the leaders of Colombia, Gustavo Petro; from Spain, Pedro Sánchez; and from Uruguay, Yamandú Orsi. Following the reserved meeting between the leaders, they met representatives of civil society, academia and reflection groups on public policies. Discussions involve three themes: defense of democracy and multilateralism; Fighting inequalities; and digital technologies and the confrontation of misinformation.
For Lula, it takes concrete and urgent actions in the face of worsening the undemocratic offensive in the world. Following the meeting between the presidents, they issued a joint statement with commitments and consensus in defense of democracy.
The document, published by the Itamaraty Palace, highlights priority and assumption actions that consider essential, such as:
– The promotion of inclusive and participatory multilateralism
– The reform of the global governance system
– The strengthening of active democratic diplomacy, based on cooperation between states that share the values of democracy, social justice, human rights and sovereignty
– reaffirm the commitment to peace, respect for international law and humanitarian rights
Tensions climbing
The meeting in Chile had been scheduled for some time, but it happens by the time the president of the United States, Donald Trump, harms tariff attacks against various countries, including Brazil. About this, still in conversation with journalists, Lula emphasized that, so far, there is no open tariff war with the United States, because Brazil has not reacted to the imposition of reciprocal tariffs.
“We are not in a tariff war. Tariff War will start when I give the answer to Trump, if [ele] Do not change your mind. Because the conditions that Trump imposed were not adequate conditions, ”he said. The Brazilian president showed optimism with a negotiated solution for the impasse and again highlighted the need for entrepreneurs to engage in joint pressure.
“I have a certain tranquility. First because I have the foreign ministry working this. I have a person of Alckmin’s quality working this. And entrepreneurs have to understand that before governments try to solve, Brazilian entrepreneurs need to talk to their counterparts in the United States, because who will suffer from it are the entrepreneurs themselves.”
Historic
The event in Chile follows the first high -level meeting in defense of democracy: fighting against extremism, held in September 2024, on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York. The event was summoned by President Lula and Spanish Pedro Sánchez.
As the next milestone of the initiative, it is planned to hold a meeting in the context of the 80th General Assembly of the United Nations next September in New York. At the time, the leaders of Mexico, England, Canada, Honduras, Australia, South Africa and Denmark should also participate.
