This is the first verdict in connection with the tragedy in which 16 people died.
The Serbian court admitted compensation to the family of one of the victims of the tragedy in the Vojvodina city of Nový Sad, where in November as a result of the newly reconstructed shelter above the entrance to the railway station, 16 people were killed. This is the first such verdict in connection with this tragedy in the north of Serbia, a court spokeswoman said on Monday, TASR writes, according to the AFP report.
After the tragedy of November 1, 2024, mass protests broke out in Serbia. Much of the Serbs believe that the tragedy has contributed to the corruption of officials, their laxity and insufficient supervision on the construction. The superstructure collapsed only a few months after the reconstruction of the building. Under the pressure of the protests, several high -ranking representatives, including Prime Minister Miloš Vučevič, resigned.
The court’s decision
The Higher Court in Novi Sad has ruled that the defendants – the state -owned enterprise of the Serbia and the Republic of Serbia – must pay four applicants to non -material damage for suffering related to the death of a family member.
Three applicants will pay five million Serbian dinars (almost 43,000 euros) and one 4.5 million Serbian dinars (more than EUR 38,400).
Further proceedings
The judgment is not yet final. There are six lawsuits prepared by the victims of the victims for non -pecuniary damage, the spokeswoman added.
The operator of the Serbian railway infrastructure has not yet announced whether he will appeal against the decision of the court.
