The New Party announced on Monday, 21, an event in which it will launch the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema, as a presidential candidate in the elections next year. The event will take place on August 16 in São Paulo.

According to the party’s statement, Zema and former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) gathered last week, a meeting in which the governor “made his intention” to run for office.

“Bolsonaro received the news positively and encouraged the pre-candidacy, highlighting the importance of more names on the right in the first round,” says the note.

Inelegable until 2030 by conviction of the Superior and Professional Court (TSE), Bolsonaro avoids nailing a name to transfer the remaining political capital.

Zema is an ally of Bolsonaro and the second right politician to launch the pre-candidacy for 2026-Governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (União Brasil), also announced his intention to run for the presidency in April.

The governor of Sao Paulo, Tarcisio de Freitas (Republicans), former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro (PL) and federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) are also on the list of possible heirs of the former president’s political estate.

In an interview with Estadão/Broadcast, Zema stated that Eduardo created a “problem” to the Brazilian right by articulating with US President Donald Trump the imposition of 50% tariffs on imported national products.

The same morning of the interview, Friday, 18, Bolsonaro was the target of action by the Federal Police (PF) and began to wear an electronic anklet by decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (STF).

Zema also stated that the Court is “clearly” a “subservient” power to the federal government, commenting on the decision to restore the Decree on the Financial Operations Tax (IOF).
