Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, owner of the Golden Medal at Paris-2024 games, gave up participating in US Open while recovering from surgery to treat a right elbow injury.
The announcement was made by the tournament organizers on Monday (21). Last week, through his social networks, Zheng revealed that he had been suffering from “persistent pain” in his right elbow, which affected his performance in both training and matches.
After trying several treatments with little success, the Chinese tennis player decided to perform an arthroscopy after consulting elbow experts and her support team. Since then, she has announced that she will take a short break in competitions to focus on her recovery.
Zheng Qinwen, just 22, got great results last year, when he won the gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games and reached the Australian Open final. However, his good pace was interrupted in this year’s Wimbledon edition, where he was eliminated in the first round for Czech Katerina Siniakova.
With the departure of Zheng, the Frenchman Leolia Jeanjean will enter the main key of the last Grand Slam of the season, which starts on August 24 in New York.
