Many drivers use the USB entry of the car just to charge their cell phone or listen to music, but the truth is that this little door can do much more than it sounds.

With the advancement of automotive technology, new functions have been incorporated into multimedia systems, and most drivers don’t even imagine how many uses they are within reach.

6 things that the USB entry of the car does and most drivers don’t know

1. Play music with a USB stick

First of all, one of the most common functions – but not everyone uses it in the best way – is playing music through a USB stick. When connecting a USB device with files in formats like MP3 or WMA, you can access ranges, browse folders and assemble playlists directly on the car screen. Thus, drivers can enjoy a personalized soundtrack, even when they are without internet.

2. Mirror the phone screen with Android Auto or Apple Carplay

In addition to playing music, the USB input allows the cell phone to mirror the car’s multimedia system. This is only possible if the vehicle is compatible with Android Auto or Apple Carplay. With this, drivers gain direct access to apps like Waze, Google Maps, Spotify and even WhatsApp, all with more security and practicality. This way, using GPS or changing music is much easier – and without taking the attention of the road.

3. Read media files besides music

Another function that goes unnoticed by many drivers is reading media files that go beyond audio. In certain car models, you can view photos in JPEG and even watch MP4 videos through a USB stick. Although it is not ideal to watch videos while driving, this option may be interesting in, especially for passengers.

4. Load your phone (but with limitations)

Of course, loading the phone through the USB input remains a useful function. However, it is important to highlight that in most cars, the supplied electric current is limited. This means that loading can be slow, especially if the device is being used at the same time. Therefore, many drivers prefer to use 12V output with an adapter, which usually ensures faster and more efficient recharge.

5. Update multimedia system software

Another little explored functionality is the ability to update multimedia center software using USB input. In many cases, automakers provide updates that the driver can download on the computer, save on a USB stick and install directly in the car. Thus, it is possible to correct failures, improve performance and even release new functions. Many drivers are unaware of this option and stop keeping the vehicle system always up to date.

6. Connect automotive accessories

Finally, it is noteworthy that the USB input also allows the connection of some automotive accessories. Depending on the model and compatibility, it is possible to connect internal cameras, digital TV receivers, data readers and even monitoring devices. With this, drivers can expand car functionality simply and accessible without having to make major modifications.
