Can children use cosmetics? Medical company guides

Increasingly, children and adolescents have resorted to Skincare using different cosmetics, and are using makeup more often. On social networks, you can find content made by young people showing their skin care routines, which has caught adult attention.

Given the scenario, the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP) launched on Tuesday (22) a scientific document with guidelines on self-care and beauty routines. The goal is to prevent health risks during the use of makeup and products.

According to SBP, cosmetics are not free of side effects and can trigger immunoallergic processes. Check out the main precautions and guidelines for use of products for skin and makeup of medical society.

Makeup

According to the publication, many children begin the use of makeup at the age of four, especially lipstick and shadow. However, early exposure to these products may interfere with natural skin development, increasing the risk of awareness and allergic reactions. Therefore, the recommendation of SBP is that the use of makeup in childhood will be postponed to the fullest.

Already in adolescence, excessive use of makeup can provide the obstruction of pores, as well as the appearance of acne and dermatitis, as well as allergies, hormonal implications and neurological toxicity, in severe cases.

The recommendation for teenage makeup use includes:

  • Use few products, suitable for age;
  • Prefer sensitive and hypoallergenic skin products;
  • Restrict use to special occasions.

Hair color

Hair color is recommended only from 12 years, with products for the age group, without ammonia, lead or oxigered water. According to SBP, the best options are temporary, which come out after washing.

Society also advises that boys and girls under 15 avoid coloring and other chemicals in their hair.

Gel nails

The procedure is not recommended for children under 16, according to SBP. In addition, people with diabetes and cancer treatment patients should not perform the procedure.

Skincare

The publication of SBP recommends a routine of basic items, consisting of cleaning, with neutral soap, hydration with light and aqueous product, and use of sunscreen, preferably oil free.

The document also points out that it is harmful, besides being unnecessary. According to SBP, these products are composed of substances such as retinoids, acids and antioxidants at high concentrations that can hurt, burn and photosensitize the skin, causing blemishes, dermatitis, acne and allergies.

Piercing and Tattoos

As a general rule, in both cases, without authorization is only allowed from 18 years. The recommendation of SBP is that, in the case of adolescents, one of the guardians follow the procedure, as well as check if the professional follows basic hygiene rules.

In the case of piercings, allergies, bleeding, sexually transmitted infections (hepatitis B, hepatitis C,), tetanus, keloids and contact dermatitis may occur. In the case of tattoos, the most frequent complications are contact dermatitis related to pigments.

Deodorants and antiperspirants

The use of antiperspirants is not recommended for children under 12, according to SBP. Deodorants can be used from the age of eight, as long as they are not presented in the form of aerosol and do not have associated antiperspirant substances.
