Food prices in Slovakia are rising, despite the fact that the basic value added value (VAT) fell from 10 % to 5 %. This was pointed out by the opposition KDH on Wednesday, saying that people are getting deeper into their wallet, but the government is not acting well enough.

“Despite the fact that Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) in the commemorative video of January 2024 announced the fight for high food prices, the results are the opposite. Since the food he had for the audience on the table, only rolls and butter have been cheaper, which can be explained by a lower 5 % VAT rate, on the contrary, the price of eggs and Edam cheese went up, which is almost 6 percent more expensive since last year’s Fico’s meeting, ” KDH MP Jozef Hajko said.

“Although the Ministry of Finance is trying to suggest that food inflation is record low and opposition politicians only haunt Not only the statistical measurements we start from, but also the experience of people in stores confirms that prices go up despite the reduction of VAT for basic foods up,“He added.

Referring to the data of the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic, the KDH pointed out the year -on -year increase in several types of basic and most often bought food. The price of bread in May increased by 1.2 %year -on -year, Edam cheese increased by 8.6 %and butter by 24 %. A significant increase in prices was recorded in foods with a 19 % or 23 % VAT rate. The price of mineral water jumped year -on -year by 6.1 %, the hen’s eggs increased by 29.9 %. The new sugar tax also brought higher raspberry prices, which increased by 26.6 % to 44.6 %.

According to KDH, June inflation was also reflected in food prices and soft drinks. According to them, jumping prices may also be related to the new tax on financial transactions. They also pointed out that although most of the goods and services jumped the tax rate to 23 %, the last estimates of the Ministry of Finance spoke about the year -round tax collection lower by approximately half a billion euros, as expected to approval the budget.

According to KDH in Slovakia, there is no detailed analysis that would evaluate the situation in the entire food chain – from crop growing to retail sales. They added that households put 21 % of their expenses on average for food and soft drinks. Rising prices, according to KDH, worse life mainly to citizens with lower incomes and reliance.
