Thailand and Cambodia armies face a border area in dispute

The armies of and maintained this morning a confrontation in a border area in dispute between the two, according to both parties, which accuse each other of having started the fray after weeks of tension in the area.

The Thai army said that Nom Pen’s forces opened fire in a border area of the province of Surin and that six Cambodian soldiers were in front of a basic basis of Thai operations “completely armed, including rocket launches.”

Meanwhile, the president of the Cambodian Senate and former leader of the country, Hun Sen, accused the Thai forces of having started the attack and launched an “invasive globe.” “The Cambodian army has no choice but to retaliate and counterattack,” Hun Sen wrote in a Facebook post.

“The pertinent agencies of the Royal Thai army closely follow the situation,” Bangkok forces, who claim to have heard “the sound of a non -man -man -manned aerial vehicle,” flying over the area.

Thailand’s interim prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, said to the media: “We received a report shortly after 8:00 (five hours ahead of Madrid) that shooting had occurred. Currently, we are investigating the details.”

“The situation requires extreme caution and must be handled according to international law. I do not want to extend at this time, and urge the media to be informed, since emergencies could arise at any time,” Wechayachai added.

Thai military leaders “are gathered” and the National Security Council has been summoned, according to the interim president, who reduced the tension by adding: “It did not become a full -fledged confrontation.”

Where do we come from

The confrontation between the armies of the neighboring nations occurs one day after a Thai soldier lost his right leg by stepping on a terrestrial mine in border territory in Ubon Ratchathani. This is the second incident of this type this month, for which Thailand reported the withdrawal of its ambassador to Cambodia, as well as the expulsion of the Cambodian ambassador to Bangkok.

Thai authorities responsible for Cambodia for the placement of land mines in Thai territory, which, they claim, constitutes a violation of the, an international agreement that prohibits the use, storage, production and transfer of antipersonal land mines, according to the public chain Thai PBS.

Bangkok and Nom Pen drag a historic territorial dispute on their shared border, fueled since the end of May, after a Cambodian soldier died in an exchange of shots between both armies.

From that incident, which both parties also accuse each other, Thailand and Cambodia have reinforced the deployment of troops in areas where territorial claims overlap.

While Bangkok advocates to reach a bilateral agreement, Nom Pen raised the conflict to the International Court of Justice (CIJ) in June.
