United States President Donald Trump will do this Thursday (24), at 5 pm (Brasília time), an official visit to the Federal Reserve (Fed, Central Bank of the US), the White House said. The trip to the Fed, the first of an American president in almost two decades, occurs amid Trump’s pressure of pressure on BC President Jerome Powell.
Trump has recurrently criticized Powell for his resistance to cutting interest, even considering his resignation, despite legal doubts about the possibility of depriving him from office. Traditionally, US presidents maintain a distance from the Fed, respecting their institutional independence, guaranteed by law.
The criticism is not just from Trump. Government members, especially White House Economic Counselors, Peter Navarro and Kevin Hassett, are also attacking the Fed. On Wednesday Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the process to choose a substitute for Powell is in progress, but stressed that there is no hurry. Trying to contain the tension climate, he repeated Trump’s statements that the resignation of the central bank head is not being considered.
This Thursday’s visit, therefore, marks a breach of protocol and represents a direct attempt to reinforce his campaign against Powell, leading criticism to the Central Bank headquarters.
