France will recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday, adding to expect this to help bring peace to the region.
Macron published on the social network X a letter sent to the president of Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, confirming France’s intention to become the first major western power to recognize a Palestinian state.
In the announcement, Macron says that there is an “urgent need that the war in Gaza is over and that the civilian population is rescued,” adding that “peace is possible.” The French president also asked for an immediate ceasefire and “demilitarization of Hamas” to protect and rebuild Gaza.
