Germany does not plan to recognize a short-term Palestinian state, noting that it is necessary to advance towards the solution of two states, according to a government spokesman on Friday (25).
“Israel’s security is of paramount importance to the German government. Therefore, the German government has no plans to recognize a short -term Palestinian state,” he said.
The statement is made after France announces that it will recognize the Palestinian State at the UN General Assembly in September. This measure was and by the United States.
The night of Thursday (24), just before British Prime Minister Keir Stmermer, point out that he would make an emergency call with France and Germany about the humanitarian situation in Gaza on Friday (25).
Other countries pronounce on recognizing Palestinian State
United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Strmer said that recognition of the Palestinian state is necessary for lasting peace.
In a statement from his cabinet on Friday, Strmer said he is working on a “path to peace” in the region, along with the nearest allies.
“This path will define the concrete measures necessary to transform the ceasefire, so desperately necessary, into a lasting peace. Recognition of a Palestinian state must be one of these steps. I am unambiguous about it,” he said.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs in Italy, in turn, pointed out that the recognition of a Palestinian state should occur simultaneously to Israel’s recognition by the new entity.
“A Palestinian state that does not recognize Israel means that the problem will not be solved,” said Chancellor Antonio Tajani at a meeting of his party, Forza Italia.
The action of France, although symbolic, stressed the growing international isolation of Israel due to the war in Gaza and can pave the way for other great nations to follow the example.
Palestinian leader greets France
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas issued a statement greeting France’s decision, giving Saudi Arabia leadership the “fundamental role in encouraging France’s decision to recognize the Palestinian state,” Palestinian official news agency Wafa said.
“President Abbas urged all countries, especially the European nations who have not yet recognized the state of Palestine, to recognize based on the solution of two states, endorsed internationally,” said Abbas, citing the newspaper.
Saudi Arabia has been pressuring France to recognize Palestine over the past year, with efforts led by Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal Bin Farhan, according to a source near the royal court.
Defense of a Palestinian State
Palestinians have long been seeking an independent state in West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem – lands that Israel captured in the 1967 Middle Eastern war – through a mediated peace process.
Many accuse Israel of destroying the perspectives of a Palestinian state through the construction of settlements in West Bank and the destruction of much of Gaza during today’s war, something the Israeli government denies.
The Palestinian Liberation Organization recognized Israel’s right to exist in peace in 1993 at the beginning of the US supported peace process, which created the Palestinian authority.
But Hamas and other Palestinian Islamic groups that dominate Gaza and often confront Israeli forces in the West Bank refuse to recognize Israel.
The 1988 group’s foundation letter predicted the destruction of Israel, although its leaders have, at times, offered a long -term truce with Israel in exchange for a viable Palestinian state throughout the Palestinian territory occupied by Israel in the 1967 war considers this a scam.
