In mainland Portugal there is a city that receives before all the others the light of day. It is called Mogadouro and is located in the Northeast Transmontano, having been elevated to the city in March this year. According to Meteored, this is the first urban point in the country to see the first sunlight every morning, thanks to its geographical position and altitude.
Located in the Bragança district, scarce kilometers from the Spain border, Mogadouro stands out for being among the most oriental Portuguese cities. This location, coupled with its natural elevation, causes sunlight to arrive earlier. According to the same source, at the summer peak the sun is born in Mogadouro around 6:06 pm, while in Lisbon only appears at 6:23 am. It is 17 minutes of difference that, for those who dawn, can transform the experience of a sunrise.
A trip to the rhythm of light
Mogadouro is, according to the Vaga world blog, one of the localities that most surprises visitors who arrive in the Northeast Transmontano. Although still little known as a tourist destination, it offers a serene environment and an engaging landscape that invites contemplation.
With less than 10,000 inhabitants, this city provides a quiet environment, ideal for a weekend away from the rapid pace of large urban centers. Near the International Douro Natural Park, it allows direct connection to nature and rural heritage, with valleys, mountains and rails to explore.
Where and how to see the sunrise first
The best way to live this phenomenon is to stay overnight in the city. St. Christopher’s viewpoint is one of the recommended places to watch the dawn, offering a unimpeded view of the region’s valleys. Also the ruins of Mogadouro Castle can be an option, providing a more historical atmosphere. According to, during the summer months, the sky begins to illuminate shortly after six in the morning, in a calm environment only interrupted by nature to awaken.
Accommodation is varied and adjusted to different preferences. Rural Touring Homes, such as Quinta da Perdigueira, central options such as Hotel Trindade Coelho or Casa das Quintas, are some of the suggestions for a comfortable and authentic stay.
Gastronomy and landscape in one destination
After sunrise, breakfast is one of the most anticipated moments. Local bread and fololars are tradition in the pastry shops of the zone. According to the local site, the most typical flavors include the post, navigation, sausages, xis soups, roast goat, regional cheeses, honey, olive oil, wine and wild mushrooms.
For those who wish to extend the morning, a walk on the tracks of the International Douro Natural Park reveals impressive cliffs and frequent sightings of birds of prey. The village of Urrós, about 20 minutes by car, can be the choice for those looking for the most traditional side of the rural world.
A weekend of light and memory
The afternoon can be devoted to the visit of historical points, such as the Mother Church or the pillory. The old Távoras Palace and the small rural museum help to understand the noble and agricultural past of the region.
To end the day, Miranda do Douro, about 35 kilometers, offers the contrast with the dawn of Mogadouro: a sunset over the Douro cliffs, in a village where the Mirandesan tongue and local traditions remain very alive.
