IPESPE: Most think Trump will disturb candidate linked to him in 2026

Most Brazilians evaluate that a candidate who has support or linked in some way to US President Donald Trump will be harmed in the 2026 presidential elections. The data are from the Ipespe survey released on Thursday, 24, that makes the impacts of the tariff announced by the US president on Brazilians’ perception.

According to the survey, 53% think that Trump’s influence or support can undermine a candidate for the presidency of Brazil, while 32% think he will help a postulant to office. Another 14% do not know or did not respond.

Observing the data on the ideological position, 88% of those who consider themselves from the left think the candidate will be harmed. Among the center respondents, 69% also think so. Of those who declare from the right, 66% think Trump’s support will help the candidate.

The family and supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) have defended the tariffs imposed by the American, which justifies the measure criticizing the treatment given to the former president and decisions of the Supreme Court (STF) against American technology companies. Trump also asked the court to terminate the criminal action against Bolsonaro, defendant for coup d’état.

The survey also asked if respondents approve or disapprove of the statements given by Brazilian leaders after the announcement of the tariffs. Who left most harmed was Bolsonaro himself, with 60% disapproval.

Following is his son, Federal Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), with 59%. Eduardo moved to the American country in February, reportedly in search of sanctions against Brazilian authorities, and has an open inquiry in the Supreme Court to investigate the performance against national sovereignty.

Presidents of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), and Senate, David Alcolumbre (Brazil-AP Union), also had the image impaired, receiving 49% of mentions disapproving of their behavior.

Widely criticized, both by opposition and allies, the governor of São Paulo, Tarcisio de Freitas (Republicans), had 46% disapproval. In the early days, Tarcisio supported Trump’s defense to Bolsonaro and held the Lula government for the crisis. Then he met with head of the US embassy Gabriel Escobar in search of solutions.

The governors, who assumed the discourse of national sovereignty and defended national interests, were the most approved by the population. Lula received 50% approval, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), 42%, and Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, 38% of the mentions.

Overall, 50% of respondents approve of the Brazilian government’s reaction to the tariff, and 46% disapprove. Only 5% did not know or did not answer the question.

The IPESPE survey listened to 2,500 people from 16 or older, between July 19 and 22, has a margin of error of two percentage points and confidence index of 95.45%.
