MNE points out that next week’s conference on two states (Israel and Palestine) will be important for the decision
The Minister of Foreign Affairs said on Friday that Portugal “has always been and will be” open to recognition of the state of Palestine, noting that next week’s conference over two states (Israel and Palestine) will be important for the decision.
Remembering that Portugal will be present at the conference on the solution of having two sovereign and recognized states in the region currently at war, which will be held in New York, United States, July 28-30, organized by France and Saudi Arabia, the minister stressed that “this conference will now be very important.”
The Prime Minister, said Paulo Rangel, “has already indicated a series of conditions [para fazer o reconhecimento do Estado da Palestina] which are parallel to conditions that France had defined and that France considered filled. ”
“Portugal is still in contact with its partners and France is one of them, no doubt,” he said, adding that “Portugal has always been open and will be at this recognition.”
The minister, who spoke on the sidelines of the “Eufrican Forum”, running today in Carcavelos, Cascais, recalled that he continues to “follow this process very closely and always in dialogue with his partners”, namely with France, whose president guaranteed a recognition soon to Palestine.
“True to its historical commitment to just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I decided that France will recognize the state of Palestine. I will make the formal announcement at the United Nations General Assembly next September,” the French head of state on social networks wrote.
A position that, according to Rangel, is not new, since it is the third time that has been announced in the last four months, and was scheduled for June 19.
“Then the attacks on Iran happened and that took place,” he said.
Paulo Rangel said, however, that Portugal, even before Spain – who has already recognized Palestine – prohibited the import and export of military material to Israel.
“It was as early as April 3, 2024. Until then no one had done any of this. On the contrary, there were even tacit authorizations for export,” he said, stressing that the concern with Israeli stance in Gaza has worked the government for a long time.
“Num ‘tweet’ [mensagem publicada na rede social X] I did by leaving the previous government on June 4, I clearly condemned the instrumentalization of hunger in Gaza by Israel, he said, adding that “the Portuguese government has been, from a humanitarian point of view, very clear.”
“From a political point of view [reconhecimento ou não do Estado palestiniano] It has done a process and this process is underway. We’ll see, ”he concluded.
