Teachers against mobile phones in Recreio from 1st to 12th grade. It would be very difficult to control

It is a restriction that has never even been recommended by the government, but is defended by 70% of the faculty. Most also disagree that students up to 9th grade can use mobile phones in school spaces.

Most teachers are against the use of smartphones In the recess in all teaching cycles and, in the case of the basics, more than half disagrees that they enter the classrooms even for pedagogical purposes.

The conclusions, released this Friday, result from a national consultation promoted by the National Federation of Education (FNE) and the Association for Training and Research in Education and Labor (AFIET).

Among 4,638 listened teachersthe overwhelming majority disagrees that students up to 9th grade can use mobile phones in school spaces, but many go further.

Near seven out of 10 teachers They consider that even the elders should not be able to use smartphones in the recess, a restriction that has never even been recommended by the government.

Despite teachers’ preference, an official report – prepared by the Public Policies Planning and Evaluation Center (Planap) at the request of the Ministry of Education and released this week – recognizes the difficulty of controlling the use of mobile phones in large schools or various teaching cycles, a situation aggravated by the lack of personnel in establishments.

“O Smartphone use control proves to be particularly difficult In large physical schools that add various cycles of teaching, aggravating in contexts of human resources scarcity, ”concludes the investigation.

And use the mobile phone for pedagogical purposes?

On the other hand, the FNE also sought to know what teachers think about the use of mobile phones as work tools and, although there is greater acceptance of equipment for this purpose, More than half (52.8%) disagrees with pedagogical use in basic education.

In this context, the position of teachers is different when the older students and 63.3% agree that smartphones can be used within classes.

As for digital school manuals, a favorable minority is recorded, and 65.8% prefer the paper.

Next school year, schools from the 2nd cycle will be able to choose the two formats, but will have to justify the decision if they choose the digital format. MECI’s decision was based on the conclusions of a study by the Directorate-General for Education and Science Statistics (DGEEC), which concluded that there are no significant effects on the students’ results.

Digitization and use of AI

Relatively to digitizationthe overwhelming majority of teachers seeks to follow the transformations and apply them in the classroom and seven out of 10 considers until they can positively change learning conditions.

Still, about half thinks they will also make it difficult to work in the classroom and, with regard to artificial intelligencefor example, 64.7% states that there is not enough knowledge to assess whether the students’ work is carried out using Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Some teachers already resort to AI tools in preparing classes or activities developed in classes, but they are a minority and, above all, the younger ones.

Despite the growing digitization of education, the results reveal that 34.2% did not attend any digital training training action, a percentage that the FNE considers still high.

What provides for the new rule

Last year, the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MECI) recommended that of education, that is, until 12, but from September the recommendation will pass the rule.

For the 3rd cycle, the idea of the government is to promote the limited, responsible and adapted use, but From the 10th the limitations disappearonly the “responsible and adapted use” is foreseen.

Basic mobile phones without internet access They can enter the students between the 1st to the 6th grade in the school room. The exception responds to one of the main concerns of parents and in charge of education, which pointed to an absence of communication with students: mobile phones capable of doing basic calls of calls and SMS “are not covered by measures, whether restrictive or prohibitive”, was explained in the presentation of the measures, cited by Expresso.

Custom applies to all schools that cover these teaching cycles, both public and private.
