Ministry confirms focus of avian flu in Rio de Janeiro Bioparque

O Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock confirmed, this Friday (25), a focus of avian flu in the African savannah enclosure, in Bioparquein Rio de Janeiro.

The occurrence took place on July 17, after the Rio de Janeiro Veterinary Service to receive a warning about sudden deaths of d’angola on the site.

Already on July 22, the Federal Agricultural Defense Laboratory of Campinas confirmed that it was the subtype H5N1 of the disease.

In addition to 16 d’angola chickens, the enclosure housed other species of animals. A, leaving only three. A peacock who died also presented clinical signs of the disease.

From the confirmation of the disease, the other animals were sacrificed as a sanitary measure to contain the spread of the virus.

Suspended visits

Biopark visits were temporarily suspended for risk assessment. Veterinary doctors, biologists and zootechnists perform animals monitoring to identify possible clinical signs of the disease.

To avoid contagion, animals from other enclosures were relocated preventively. There were also structural biosecurity changes to avoid contact between resident birds and wild birds, and the reinforcement of biosecurity protocols for management teams, using PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).

The African savannah enclosure will remain banned, with public health agencies acting for the control and eradication of the focus of aviary flu.

“Given the great economic relevance of the poultry sector for the country, the official veterinary service reinforces the need to intensify biosecurity measures in all poultry establishments,” the ministry concludes.

Avian flu case in the interior of São Paulo

Last Wednesday (23) was confirmed a new case of aviary flu in the interior of São Paulo, according to information from the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply of the State.

The case was registered in a subsistence creation in Monte Azul Paulista. The secretary confirmed that sanitary measures were taken, with no risk to the population, with the consumption of poultry and eggs remaining safe.
